Unspecial

Let me tell you a story -

Once upon a time, there was a girl named Lauren, and she had everything. She had a lovely home in Hong Kong with windy stairs and glass tables - her siblings and her even had a garden with a big wooden playhouse flown from Bali! They played House and tea time and her childhood was perfect. She had a family that gave her all the oppurtunities she could ever hope for. Her family was caring, humble and loved her with all their heart.

Growing up, kids in her class used to call her "princess". "Princess", however, was never a good term where she came from. "Princess" meant in her language, a spoiled brat, someone who always got what they wanted in a snap of a finger. That wasn't her. Her parents raised her to be a good person, a humble one, and she knew from the bottom of her heart, that the things she wanted in life, she had to work for. She knew she was lucky, and she was grateful - she tried to prove to the kids in her class that she was better - but it was never enough.

As the leaves changed and she moved on to bigger and brighter things, she came to a school where there were only princesses and princes.

She met Prince Charming. He was tall, dark and handsome. Everyone knew him, everyone wanted to be him. He was, indeed, very, very charming. However, under the layers of gelled hair, white smiles and devilishly handsome charm, she was able to peel back the layers - she realized that he was nothing but an insecure, hurt man. He was just a human being. A human being hiding something very ugly. She saw the ugly side of him, the angry, the sad, the depressed - something that no one would know existed, something that would only turn on in the dark, and something that she thought made him so beautiful, so human. When the full moon rised in the night sky, the ugly side brought out the ugly side of her too. He managed to emphasize her insecurities, he made her feel like an ogre. Every time, he smashed her crystal heart and fulfilled her worst nightmares by gallopping into the night with another damsel in distress on his white horse. She watched as he left into the sunrise, and she feared that his words were empty and watched as he chased his happy endings without her. At night, when the trees looked like monsters, he would crawl back to her and twirl her in his arms with that charming smile of his, and again, she would fall under his spell.

Every time, she tried to heal, she wanted to believe his every word, but he never understood that the kind of hurt he inflicted on her, was the kind of hurt that had no magic that could heal her in an instant. It was the kind of hurt that could only heal through time - and maybe, that would take years and years of it.

After time and time again of this twisted tale, the prince found a new happy ending with a new damsel, and Lauren was sure that this one would stick. She was happy for him, maybe this princess would find a Prince Charming that would stay.

Though she was happy for him, there was a small part of Lauren that felt broken. Maybe all her life she believed she could be someone worthy like Cinderella, or Sleeping Beauty, but truth is, maybe she was just the ugly stepsister. Maybe she was Maleficent. Maybe she was just the old, ugly, terrible Prince Charming ruining, monster, in the way to his ultimate happiness, to his princess. She felt like worst of all, she was unspecial.

Over the years of healing, she met new princes. Some were kind, some fought demons and dragons with her, but none made her feel special. She found new Prince Charmings, but quite like the first one, they held out an ugly side - but she knew this time, that she had to run. She ran far away from Prince Charmings and ran and ran until she couldn't run anymore.

She stumbled, and she fell. She fell into a home that smelled like Febreze, cheesy Ruffles and stinky socks. She fell into a hole where there were only kings and queens. These kings and queens picked her up, bandaged her up and healed her soul. They made her food, travelled far and wide to bring her happiness. They carried her through seas of monsters. They yodelled off mountains to call for help. They did everything without even knowing that they were the secret weapon to the ultimate happy ending. They helped Lauren to realize that being a princess - only led her to become her best, potential, bad ass, monster-fighting, selfless queen. A queen without a king.

They picked up her pieces, and slowly, she began to feel special again. Instead this time, she knew she didn't need any Prince Charmings to feel like she was worthy. Instead this time, maybe your fairytale ending is a humorous plot twist that you just never saw coming.

There are still times that I feel unspecial, and I believe maybe one day I will get to find a king, but I don't think I want anymore Prince Charmings, just a good, ole, honest fella. Maybe, the ones that make you feel unspecial have no power over you - because ultimately they are grains of sand blowing in the wind. I guess the ones that can make such an "unspecial" human being feel special are the true special people you should keep in your life... right? I think so.

I love you, and that is the end. ;)
