Punta Cana
Written for my CWR201 Class, inspired by the one and only boy who teared down my house but ultimately taught me to build my own palace.
Let's go back to that memory in
Punta Cana
He brought her to the beach
The white sand
So white
Like it could be a blank canvas.
She sees a dead sea cucumber.
Its guts spilling and sloshing in every
strike of the waves.
She know he sees it
But he pretends like the smell isn't
there.
The tangerine sun peeks from
the black Jell-O.
She yawns.
He puts his arms around her,
like he has no one
else in the world.
He says "I love you",
with everything that he is.
Good thing,
He only has two months left of love
to spend.
"I love you too."
A promise emptier than the sun,
but one that she shoves
the smelly white sand
into,
again and again.
"Do you think the sun will go down?"
She asks.
He knows the answer to this,
but tells her: "no."
She chooses to believe him
Because the sun seems so pretty,
The sand is so white,
She forgets about the smelly cucumber,
and the black sea,
Like maybe
it was all just a bad dream.
Even though she knows,
way deep down,
that when the sun goes down,
the boy is gone
And she is
alone
again.
